Holi is one of the widely known traditional festival which depicts the death of Holika. It is also associated with the magical evacuation of Bhakt Prahlad from fire. According to the Hindu scriptures, this ritual is known as Holika Dahan. It is also known as Holika Deepak or Chhoti Holi.
Holika Dahan has to be performed when Pradosh Kaal starts after sunset while Purnimasi Tithi is in prevalence. This is also known as the festival of colors. This year Holika Dahan is on 9th March Monday and Dhulandi is on 10th March Tuesday. With the celebration of this festival of colors in spring, the entire country welcomes the full moon day in spring or Phalgun (Februaru – March). The Holi celebrations take place for two days. The first day is known as Holika Dahan while the second day is Dhuleti, Dhulandi or Dhulivandan. On this second day people play with colors. Holi symbolizes the conquest of good over evil. In this religious ceremony of Holika Dahan people roast “jau” in the fire of Holika and then that is being brought to home. This is considered as good for the family members. They also burn five “upali” which is considered as burning all the problems.
What kinds of clothes are convenient for Holi?
Holi festival is always special for everyone as it is the festival of colors. Cotton clothes should be ideal over any other fabric during this festival. It helps you to retain coolness during holi. Women can wear loose, easy to wear and vibrant colored cotton clothes which will not only have fashion but also help you to feel comfortable. Although you are totally color drenched, but your clothes will help you in that condition. Full sleeves kurta and palazzos are ideal for such occasion. It has to be kept in mind that you don’t wear any skin tight clothes as that would make the color stick to your body. Loosely fitted clothes are cool in fashion and handy. Scarf or Dupatta can also be another add on factor for women. Despite all these you should not be afraid of getting colors from your friends or family as it is this day that will make your colors shine.
How to be safe in Holi?
You have to play safe during holi. You should keep in mind that nobody should coarse you to get colors. You should not let others to be rude on you.
If there are no natural colors then you should assure that the colors that you are using or letting other use are better quality colors.
Red and pink colors are comparatively soothing and can be taken off.
You need to make sure that your face is creamed in good way during and after the play so that the colors do not stick to your face.
You should also cover your hair with a cap or hat and do not forget to rinse your hair after playing.
Dental caps should also be used to save your teeth.
If it is possible, try not to go outside during the peak hour of celebration in order to avoid hooliganism.
You should also remember that police is always there to take your complaint, and hence do not forget to inform them in case of any kind of mishap.
Over indulgence in bhang, drinks or foods should also be avoided.
